Ghost Towns and Mining Camps of Southern Nevada (2010, Arcadia Publishing, 128 Pages, 228 Photos)

Newly released in February 2010!!

Ghost towns and mining camps are the last remaining vestiges of the Old West; there is a mystique surrounding these places that has made exploring them a pastime for many in the western United States. Nevada has more than a thousand of these boom-and-bust towns. Some are completely abandoned, while some still struggle to survive and even serve as county seats. This books covers places such as Tonopah, Manhattan, Belmont, Aurora, Candelaria, Goldfield, Rhyolite and Bullfrog, Carrara and Tybo. Sadly, these wonderful places, including those covered in this volume, are constantly in danger from vandalism and neglect. Many ghost towns and mining camps have been destroyed or damaged needlessly, and those who are captivated by their charm must protect these windows into history so that they survive for future generations.

Book is 128 pages and contains more than 220 vintage and current photographs with captions. This is a departure from my normal books and is basically a photo book. I have always had to struggle to get photos in my other books so this was a wonderful opportunity to use as many photographs as I could find! Book retails for $21.95. Available direct from the author for $20 and personally autographed.

A Guide to the Ghost Towns and Mining Camps of Nye County, Nevada (1981, Dodd Mead & Co., 162 pages, 102 photos)

This is the book that was my first publication. Now almost 30 years old, the book's printing of 7500 copies sold out by 1985. However, I still have a limited amount of unused, still wrapped editions. The book hasn't been available to the public for 25 years. Used copies sell on Amazon for as high as $50! Ah, the author of a book always gets so little! I am offering these books for $20 and will be happy to personally autograph the book for you.

Connecting The West: Historic Railroad Stops And Stage Stations In Elko County, Nevada (2002, UNR Press, 217 pages, 118 photos)

Shawn Hall's immensely popular guidebooks to Nevada ghost towns have become essential resources for backcountry explorers and scholars alike. Now Hall returns to Elko County to survey the county's railroad and stage stations, as well as other sites not included in his earlier survey of this vast and colorful section of the state.

As in his earlier volumes, Hall includes a history of each site he lists, along with period and contemporary photographs, directions for locating the sites, and an assessment of their present condition. His historical accounts, based on a wide range of primary and secondary sources, are both scholarly and engaging, rich in anecdotes and personalities, and in the fascinating minutia of history often ignored by more academic writers.

Shawn Hall's dedication to documenting Nevada's thousands of historic sites has enriched our knowledge of the state's relatively brief but very eventful past. Connecting the West is a worthy addition to Hall's remarkable efforts to preserve the state's history. Available direct from the author for $20 and personally autographed.

Old Heart of Nevada: Ghost Towns and Mining Camps of Elko County(1998, UNR Press, 308 pages, 120 photos)

Elko County is rich in historic sites, many of them hitherto uncharted and some verging on disappearing. Now, for the first time, one book identifies and locates the ghost towns and old mining camps of Elko County and recounts their colorful histories. Following a guidebook format, I divide the county into five easily accessible regions, then list the historic sites within each region and provide directions to reach them. A history of each site as well as a description of its extant structures and their present condition is included. The result is a lively compilation of local history and mining and ranching lore that records the colorful and dramatic past of Nevada's northeast corner - its pioneers and prospectors, its towns and mines, its outlaws, ranchers, merchants, mining concerns, and civic leaders. The book offers never before available information about the "old heart" of Nevada and the people who settled there. It will be of enduring value to tourists and weekend explorers, historic preservationists, and all those interested in the history and artifacts of this important and colorful region. Retails for $23.95. Available direct from the author for $20 and personally autographed.

Preserving the Glory Days: Ghost Towns and Mining Camps of Nye County, Nevada(1999, UNR Press, 301 pages, 115 photos)

Nye County is Nevada's largest and least populated county, but it is also the site of many of the state's most colorful ghost towns and mining camps. The county's economy throughout its history has been largely based on its mines - first exploiting veins of gold and silver, and more recently, extracting deposits of raw materials for modern industry, such as molybdenum and barite. It was here that famous boomtowns like Tonopah and Rhyolite sprang up following the discovery of nearby lodes that brought in rushes of prospectors and the merchants who supported them. But the county includes many smaller, shorter-lived camps and numerous abandoned stagecoach and railroad stops associated with defunct mining operations. Preserving the Glory Days offers a lively, informative record of Nevada's isolated interior. It will engage readers curious about the region's boom and bust past and will guide explorers and desert enthusiasts to the locations of some of the West's most fascinating ghost towns and historic sites. Retails for $23.95. Available direct from the author for $20 and personally autographed.
